Boosting a post isn't advertising — here's what actually gets you leads

You post something on your business page. Up pops Facebook, helpfully: "Boost this post to reach more people." One tap, £20, done. Feels like advertising.

It mostly isn't. Boosting is the most expensive way to feel busy while getting very little back — and if you've ever boosted a few posts and wondered why the phone didn't ring, this is why.

What "boosting" actually does

When you boost a post, you're asking Facebook to do one thing: show it to more people. That's it. The goal baked into that button is reach — eyeballs — not enquiries.

So Facebook does exactly what you asked. It finds cheap attention: people who'll glance, maybe like it, and scroll on. You get a nice bump in "likes" and "views", a warm fuzzy feeling that something happened, and a notification telling you how many people it reached. What you usually don't get is anyone actually contacting you to buy something.

You paid for attention. You didn't ask for leads. So you didn't get leads.

What a real campaign does differently

A proper campaign is built around a completely different question: who do we need to reach, and what do we want them to do? That changes everything underneath it:

  • The objective. Instead of "reach", it's set to leads or enquiries — so Facebook hunts for people likely to act, not just look.
  • The targeting. Not "boost to my followers and their mates", but the specific kind of customer you want, in the area you serve.
  • The creative. An ad written to make the right person stop and respond — a clear offer and a reason to act now, not just a nice photo.
  • Lead capture. A form or a click-to-message setup so an interested person can become an enquiry in the moment, while they're hot.
  • Optimisation. Someone watching what it costs per lead and steadily improving it — killing what doesn't work, scaling what does.

Boosting has none of that. It's a single button with a single, shallow goal.

The honest side-by-side

Boosting a post A real campaign
Goal More views More enquiries
Who sees it Cheap, easy attention People likely to buy
What you get Likes & reach Leads on your phone
Improves over time No Yes

"But boosting is so easy"

It is. That's exactly the problem. It's designed to be one tap because one tap gets you spending. Easy and effective aren't the same thing — and the easy button is optimised for Facebook's convenience, not your phone ringing.

None of this means your posts shouldn't exist, by the way. Organic posting builds trust and keeps your page looking alive. Just don't confuse boosting those posts with running ads that bring in work. They're different jobs.

What to do instead

If your aim is leads — actual enquiries you can quote and win — you want a campaign with a lead objective, proper targeting, an ad built to get a response, somewhere for that response to land, and someone improving it week on week.

That's the whole point of what we do, and it's why a £99 campaign run properly will out-earn a boosted post every time. You're not buying reach. You're buying your phone ringing.

Tired of boosting posts and hearing nothing back? Let's swap it for a proper campaign — leads in your first 14 days or you don't pay.
